Juan Mata can improve on Leicester display
Overall Performance: Saturday’s game was actually a very mediocre team performance at Old Trafford but one which gave us three points at the end of the day. Leicester as a team looked much better on paper and in reality but at the end of the day left with no points. This win ought to be taken on the face value of points keeping in mind the injuries we had going into the game.
Individual performances were what took us over the line with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire putting in a commendable shift. Scott McTominay who was the Man of the Match put in a leadership performance in our midfield.
Individual Performances that could have been better:
Juan Mata: His pace has really hamstrung his game but that does not come as a surprise given his age. There were quite a few moments in the first half wherein his touch was a bit heavy and that really led to a few attacks not materializing at the end of the day. Definitely did not have a poor game but overall he seemed to lack the cutting edge United needed to see off the game. His substitution was a bit of surprise with Chong coming on instead of Angel Gomes.
Nemanja Matic: For his first start of the season Matic started the game really well but as the game progressed the dip in his performance was quite evidently visible. His average range of passing was a cause of concern for the other players who had to make up for the errors by the midfielder. Over the past couple of months his movement on the ball has become quite slow and that really disrupts the tempo of our counterattacking style of play. His substitution in the second half came at the right moment, with Fred raising the tempo with this aggressive style of play.
Victor Lindelof: Victor had a shaky start to the game and United were lucky in the opening 10 minutes that David made a good save of Maddison’s shot. As the game progressed Victor settled into the game and became more composed. His inconsistent performance this season can become a cause of concern considering Axel is waiting for his moment. Partnership building with Harry is key and the dip in performance are expected at times but he needs to take a stock of the situation and be the Victor of last season.
