Player Ratings: West Ham 2 United 0

A look at individual performances after a dismal visit to the capital.

23 September 2019

De Gea: Despite the score line , one would be hard pressed to fault the keeper for the 2 goals conceded. Generally had a comfortable game. – 6.5

Wan-Bissaka: Yet another solid defensive performance from the young right-back with the only holes in his game being going forward. His final ball in the opponents half leaves much to be desired. – 7

Lindelof: Fresh from signing a new contract during the week the Swedish centre half looked to prove his worth with a solid performance at the back. He also showed a willingness to carry the ball out from the back and look to get United back in the game. – 6.5

Maguire: After a good start to the season it was a surprise to see the usually commanding defender have such a quite game. A split second of indecision saw him lose his man in the box which led to the opener for West Ham. Had a good chance to pull one back for United in the 2nd half but saw his shot saved. – 5.5

Young: It’s difficult to really identify what Ashley Young has to offer, a player that is clearly past his best days and doesn’t command his players the way you would expect from a captain. Wan-Bissaka often had to switch flanks with him to deal with the West Ham threat. Committed the foul outside the box that led to the hosts scoring their 2nd from the free kick. – 4

McTominay: A good all round performance from the young midfielder who continues to prove he is United’s best option in his role. Has the makings of a future United captain. – 6.5

Matic: Yet another ageing player who is clearly past his glory days. Dispossessed several times in midfield and struggled to keep up with the pace of the game which led to West Ham controlling the tempo for a majority of the match. – 4.5

Pereira: Very good work rate off the ball with a propensity for a high press. The downside however was his work on the ball, often indecisive and with passes frequently missing the mark. – 5.5

Mata: It’s difficult to tell where the Spaniard’s ideal position is for this United team, this time sitting in the attacking midfield role he looked unable to have any significant impact going forward. He also struggled with the physicality of the West Ham players and looked overwhelmed by it. – 5

James: Often the only shining light going forward for United which unfortunately seemed to be what his team mates thought as well. A clear over reliance on the Welsh forward became even more apparent when Rashford was taken off due to injury. Gave 100% from start to finish. – 7.5

Rashford: There were moments when he looked to carry the team forward and threatened the West Ham defence, however these moments were few and far between. Wasted the few opportunities he had and ultimately saw a promising 2nd half end pre-maturely through injury. – 6

Lingard: Coming on for the injured Marcus Rashford, Lingard didn’t offer much to United’s play. Often looking lost with positioning and having minimal impact on the ball. – 4.5

Fred: Subbed on for Matic in the 70th minute , it’s anyone’s guess why the Brazilian didn’t start ahead of the Serbian in the first place. Seemed to tidy up the midfield after coming on and looking to pick up the pace of United’s overall play. – 5.5

Gomes: With 9 minutes of play left, the young attacking midfielder came on for Juan Mata. Not much can be expected from someone so young and still learning his game. A good opportunity to get minutes under his belt but a substitution that didn’t necessarily have any purpose. – 5
