It’s that time again Reds.
The time has come again for another local derby between two Manchester clubs desperate to have bragging rights over the other side of the city. 44 games played between City and United in the Premier League with the red side of town winning 21 in comparison to 15 for the blue side. The most successful club in Manchester hasn’t had much success in recent times but a derby is always something every United fan looks forward to.
Local derbies always tend to muster up a lot of talking points and this one hopes to be no different. Over the years, there has been some memorable games between the two and I look at some derby games that stick out in the memory more than others for us Manchester United fans:
Manchester United 5-0 Manchester City: 1994
Fans wanted revenge for the 5-1 drubbing that Manchester City handed to them in 1989. Fans certainly got what they wanted when the reds smashed City 5-0. A brilliant performance from Andrei Kanchelskis saw him complete a hattrick with a bursting run down the right to tuck the ball past the City goalkeeper and finish a one sided Manchester Derby. A game remembered for an incredible performance from Manchester United’s Russian.
Manchester City 2 v Manchester United 3: 1996
Newcastle United were 12 points ahead when United made the short trip to Maine Road and desperately needed to pick up points to close the gap if they were to have any hope of winning the league. Cantona gave us the lead but City equalised, however, an Andy Cole goal restored our lead before once again City equalised with Uwe Rosler. With the threat of falling even further behind Newcastle a young Ryan Giggs (whatever happened to him?) won it for the reds on this occasion. Manchester United did close the gap and win the league that season whilst City were relegated on goal difference. How times change…
Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City: 2009
An ever so famous ‘Fergie time’ goal. After a shocking defensive mistake from Rio Ferdinand gifting the ball to Craig Bellamy for him to sprint away and make it 3-3 late in the game, it looked a certainty for the points to be shared. However, Drama ensued. Four minutes added on but that didn’t stop Michael Owen scoring in the 96th minute to win it for United. Limbs everywhere and Mark Hughes in a rage gave us a memorable Derby day back in 2009.
Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City: 2011
It took a moment of sheer brilliance from Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney to secure all three points in this one. Nani gave the Old Trafford side the lead until a deflected effort saw David Silva equalise for City. With a goal already to his name, Nani floated the ball into the box which met Wayne Rooney. A stunning over head kick leaving Joe Hart in a stand still saw the reds claim all three points in a season that saw Manchester United overtake Liverpool by winning their 19th top flight title.
Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United: 2018
This match was an opportunity for Manchester City to win the league in their own backyard against the team they hate the most. A dream nearly made a reality when Manchester City went 2-0 up before half time. However, an incredible second half performance from United halted any title celebrations as we saw two goals from Paul Pogba and a winning goal from the unlikely Chris Smalling. City were made to wait an extra week for the title, but it didn’t stop the bragging rights in the offices of Manchester go to the red side.
